Team Sunweb’s Mike Teunissen has taken 15th place at the Tour of Turkey’s queen stage, with a mountain top finish in Selçuk.
The queen stage saw the peloton contest three categorised climbs across it’s 206.9 kilometres, with a second category climb to the finish in Selçuk. Five riders made a move in the opening kilometres with a group of three eventually making it across mid-race. The eight were reeled in with 15 kilometres left to race and with the day’s terrain continuing to intensify, the bunch began to reduce.
Team Sunweb worked to position Louis Vervaeke ahead of the final climb, where he made a move at the front of the bunch but was quickly reeled in by the chasers. Also still in contention was Mike Teunissen who continued amongst the GC group until it had shrunk to just 20 riders. A final acceleration saw a select group go forward to take the stage win, with Mike finishing in a solid 15th place.
Mike said: “The plan was to drop Louis at the bottom in good position which went well and he went quickly in the attack but didn’t get a lot of space. I still felt okay and just followed until there were only 20 guys left, then I just continued as fast as possible but just missed the last acceleration and finished 15th.”
