Team Sunweb’s Edward Theuns has taken 9th place at the opening day of the Tour of Turkey today, as the stage concluded with a bunch sprint in Konya.
A five man move was allowed clear in the early kilometres of the stage, but with the sprint teams keen to keep things under control for a fast bunch kick to the line, their advantage was never allowed over the two minute marker. Team Sunweb remained tucked in the comforts of the bunch, with their eye on positioning Edward Theuns up for the finale.
The catch was eventually made with 13 kilometres to go after a well timed chase from the bunch. Heading towards the flamme rouge it was Team Sunweb that led the field, bringing Edward up to sprint to 9th place.
Edward said: “I’m happy to be up there. It was tricky with a slippery last corner and my front wheel slipped and I lost my speed, but the team worked well together to bring me to the front on the right time to compete in the sprint.”
Team Sunweb coach Tom Veelers added: “The guys did a good job today during this first stage in Turkey. Five riders went clear but it was all under control and we took it easy in the peloton, although the parcours were quite demanding with some altitude metres. The guys did a good lead-out towards the sprint, but they slipped a bit and lost contact with the front. The good communication and team work gives us confidence for the upcoming days and we’re looking forward to what’s coming up for the rest of the week.”
