Messy sprint in the rain sees Coryn Rivera finish 11th in Guangxi

Tour of Guangxi Women's WorldTour

The last Women’s WorldTour race of the year saw the peloton take on a 145 kilometre long parcours, starting and finishing in Guilin. With a flat start to the day, there were several attacks before a lone rider managed to break clear of the bunch and forge on at the head of the race.

Extending their advantage to five minutes, the peloton increased the intensity once into the second half of the day and started to reel the leader in. As the race’s two climbs began the pace increased even further, with riders dropped from the bunch and the breakaway ultimately caught.

A group of around 25 riders crested the second summit together but after the descent and on the flat run in to the finish, other riders were able to make it back to the peloton. As the rain began to fall, it became clear the day would be decided in a bunch sprint finish. Susanne Andersen worked to position Coryn Rivera near the front of the group, but both would lose some positions in the finale on the wet roads.  After Andersen did her best to reposition Rivera, the American opened up her sprint from quite far back, crossing the line in 11th place.

“We had a small but mighty team today for our last race of the season and we were focused and went all in.” explained Rivera. “Pernille and Susanne were sharp on dangerous attacks then we focused on getting in position for the climbs of the day. I was feeling good there and Susanne also survived the climbs well. From there it was clear the race would end in a reduced bunch sprint but it began to rain in in the last 20 kilometres and the Chinese roads were slippery. Susanne did a great job keeping us safe in the top ten but with one and a half kilometres to go we both slipped and lost our position at a crucial moment. We did our best to get back in position but ran out of space and I was only able to manage 11th. I think we did the best we could considering the circumstances and we can close the chapter for 2019 and look ahead to next year.”
