Asbjørn Kragh Andersen 6th after late attack, Max Kanter sprints to 10th

Gree-Tour of Guangxi

The last day of racing at the Tour of Guangxi saw the peloton faced with a similar stage to yesterday; with a mostly flat parcours before a couple of climbs in the closing 50 kilometres. Once out of the neutralised zone there were a few probing attacks before a group of five riders got clear and formed what would be the break of the day.

The gap ballooned out quickly to almost four minutes but the sprint teams soon took over at the head of the peloton to keep proceedings under control. The race remained in status quo  as the bunch hit the two climbs of the day, with a steady pace set by the peloton. Consequently, heading into the last 25 kilometres the breakaway still had an advantage of over two minutes and 30 seconds, resulting in a fast finale.

Ultimately the break was caught with five kilometres to go and the jostle for position began. The team started to move Max Kanter towards the front of the bunch but lost each other a little coming into the finale. Asbjørn Kragh Andersen attacked inside the final 500 metres, attempting to draw out the peloton and open up some space for Kanter. Holding a gap around the final corner, Kragh Andersen dug deep but was caught in the final 150 metres, eventually finishing in 6th place. Unfortunately, a crash around the final corner held up Kanter, who delivered a good turn of speed to sprint past some of his opponents and finish in tenth, meaning it was a double top ten for the team on the day.

With no changes in the GC standings, Martijn Tusveld finishes the race with a strong tenth place overall; rounding out a good final week of racing for the team in 2019.

“We planned to protect Martijn’s top ten in the GC and go for Max in the sprint,” explained Kragh Andersen at the finish. “Throughout the day I think we rode well together and the communication was good; the guys supported each other well. After the two climbs it stalled a bit before the bunch chased the break down. We were fully committed to go for Max but it started to rain so it was really messy in the last kilometres and we lost each other a bit after the corners. I looked to find Max again and went to the front in the last kilometre and did my full lead out. Suddenly I had a gap and I doubted if I should continue or wait, but I decided to continue. Out of the last corner the guys behind still had a draft and came past in the end, where I finished sixth. Overall, I think it was a good way to finish the season and we can definitely take some things with us for next year.”

Kanter continued: “We were all motivated to do well on the last stage. It was controlled throughout the day, and there wasn’t too much stress in peloton. In the end it came down to a sprint where it was really nervous in the finale with the rain. The guys tried to position me but we lost each other a little bit. One guy crashed in front of me in the last corner but Asbjørn was still able to take sixth and I could finish tenth. I think it is again a solid result for us here.”

Team Sunweb coach Matt Winston added: “The guys were well positioned with around five kilometres to go but they lost each other on the run in to town. Asbjørn went long to try and draw out the peloton a bit and free up some space for Max to move forward. Asbjørn came round the left hand corner in first but Max was a little too far back and was stalled by the crash as well. We got a sixth and tenth place but we need to look at the sprint and take some learning points from it. On the plus side it has been a good week for us with Martijn in the top ten on GC and six top ten finishes on the stages throughout the week, so all in all a solid performance.”
