Max Kanter sprints to good 7th place in hectic finale

Gree-Tour of Guangxi

Today’s action saw the peloton take on the longest stage of the Tour of Guangxi, with 212 kilometres from Liuzhou to Guilin awaiting the riders. As in previous stages, a breakaway was able to establish itself at the head of the race early into the day, with the group of four building up an advantage of just over five minutes.

With no rider in the breakaway a threat to the GC leader, it was up to the sprint teams to take control at the front of the peloton and the gap soon started to fall as the race entered the second half the day. Two tricky climbs in the final 50 kilometres saw the pace in the peloton increase even more and the break was caught before the summit of the last ascent. A strong group of 12 riders escaped from the peloton, including Martijn Tusveld, before proceedings slowed down and more riders were able to return.

On the flatter finale a sprint finish was almost inevitable and the peloton was happy to ride for that outcome. The team worked well to move Max Kanter up towards the front of the bunch in the closing kilometres, but on the wide roads and with lots of riders having just returned to the peloton, it was a hectic finish. After a strong final lead out from Nikias Arndt, Kanter delivered a good turn of speed to cross the line in seventh place, claiming his second top ten of the race.

“The day was pretty quiet until the climb started,” explained Kanter. “We had Florian in the chase who did a good job. On the climbs it started to become a bit more nervous and the pace increased in the bunch and the peloton split. We were in a group of around 60 riders and it came down to a sprint finish. The guys did a good job and positioned me well. In the end I was able to start my effort but I had to hesitate and brake at one moment so it was not a perfect sprint, but I think it was a solid result again for us today.”

Team Sunweb coach Matt Winston added: “It was a nice seventh place for Max at the finish. The guys did a good job protecting Martijn on the GC and when the race exploded, Martijn rode well to be in a dangerous group that broke clear on the climb. That group came back and it was then it was down to the sprint for Max. It was a bit of a messy sprint finish with around 30 guys returning to the bunch with ten kilometres to go, but the guys brought Max into a good position where he could sprint to seventh. It was a day of some more nice teamwork and another top ten for us in Guangxi.”
