Winner of the 2017 Giro d’Italia, and second in both the 2018 Giro d’Italia and Tour de France, Tom Dumoulin has become one of the most exciting Grand Tour riders of a generation.
Also a supreme time-triallist, he has world titles in both the individual and team time trial. He has developed in to one of the biggest GC threats in world cycling, having won stages in all three Grand Tours, but merely stumbled upon cycling as a kid.
He loved sports but was a football player. Aged 15, he tried riding a bike and joined a club, and racing was all part of it:
This year, he wants to step up once again, and win another Grand Tour. And like most bike riders, he dreams of winning the Tour de France. The 28-year-old is also looking to the Yorkshire 2019 world championships to regain his world time trial title.
Team Sunweb is a good match for Tom, who has spent six years with the team. Not only does he like his teammates, it has become family.
Friendly and laid back off the bike, Tom maintains an ice cool focus on it. Simply, he is a rider who knows what he wants and how to achieve it, and he admits his teammates may say he can be a little stubborn and at times explosive.
Last season’s off-season saw Tom get married, and while not riding a bike he loves spending time walking his dog, a white shepherd, and taking him for coffee. He enjoys watching Peaky Blinders on Netflix and is eagerly awaiting the next season.
