Another of the team’s Australian contingent, Robert enjoyed a good opening season with Team Sunweb, helping Wilco Kelderman to seventh place on GC at the Vuelta a España. He does admit that it took a little while to settle in but that’s only natural in a new environment and in the second half of the year he was a lot more familiar with everything, something that was reflected in his performances.

“I felt during the Giro I was going well and then in the Dauphiné too, but the opportunity never really came to show it. At the Vuelta, everything finally clicked in that last week and I was able to show my legs.”

Formerly a rugby player, Robert made the switch to cycling, enjoying the simplicity of the sport and being able to just “take your bike and ride.”

The Perth native currently resides in Andorra and likes its secluded nature, especially when returning home after a hectic block of racing.

“I really like living in Andorra. Going back there in the mountains, there aren’t too many distractions, you can just relax for a week if you want. I sometimes go out hiking in the mountains as there are some nice day hikes you can do nearby.”

Laidback and sociable, Robert enjoys the team aspect of the sport and is a willing team player no matter the terrain. Not only motivated by working towards team goals, Robert also likes to meet new people through the sport and seeing improvements in his own performances.

After completing his first Grand Tour in 2019, the Australian hopes to see the benefits of that in his performances over the coming years. A stickler for pain, Robert jokes about his enjoyment of just racing his bike.

“There is something fun about Grand Tours, being good and consistent for three weeks; it’s tough but fun. Likewise, I also enjoy one day races where you just turn up and go full gas for a day then go home; it’s all fun.”
