A cyclocross and road rider, Joris is one of the most versatile, multi-talented riders within Team Sunweb. Already world U23 champion (2017) and with a silver medal to his name last season, the 22-year-old has now progressed from the Development program to the 2019 WorldTour team.

2018 was a mixed year for the Dutchman. His road season was short and intense, after undergoing surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation earlier in the year. Now he is ready to excel on both the road and cyclocross bikes.

“I really like doing both disciplines and look forward to both seasons. Coming second at the 2018 cyclocross world championships was a big achievement this year, I was injured and mentally it was so hard for the whole season. But I mentally charged myself and got a good result there, against the odds.”

Joris started cycling on a BMX, as his father worked near a track and he had been desperate to ride. Soon, that passion for the bike saw Joris take on a local cyclocross race in the winter months. From that point, the progression was natural, from regional, to national and eventually international World Cups. He trained on his road bike in the summer.

He has big dreams in both disciplines – the elite world cyclocross championship title and a win at Paris-Roubaix.

“For me Paris Roubaix is the biggest race in the world. I’ve got good results climbing and am an all-rounder. I hope to specify in coming years to become a good Classics rider – that’s the racing I like, that’s where my passions and strengths are.

“I love the competition of racing, and to push myself further. Everyone starts at one level and I really like to push that level, see those improvements and how far I can go. I want to push my limits, and get great satisfaction achieving that. That is also one of the key elements of the team too, the philosophy of always searching for new things to improve.”

Off the bike, Joris loves music and is a big fan of blues and rock. He plays guitar and finds it relaxing away from the sport.

Superstitious, Joris takes juggling balls to every race.

“I always bring three juggling balls and try to teach my roommates too. Jarno and Nils both learned this year. A lot have tried it, some just give up too easily!”
