Road captain Johannes Fröhlinger’s love for cycling began in 1999, on a family holiday. Inspired to ride by his father, he then saw cyclists racing up the Col de Galibier and immediately knew it was the sport for him.
He raced for Team Gerolsteiner, in his home town, and eventually he would race to a third place in a mountain top finish at the Tour de France – some journey for the little boy watching with his father all those years ago. He still ranks Grand Tour team success as his greatest achievements on the bike.
Now captain on the road for Team Sunweb, Fröhlinger brings a laid back, fun and stable approach, combined with a desire to race and win and a professionalism and respect for the sport and the team.
Perhaps one of the worst kept secrets about Johannes is his love for punk rock band Bad Religion, the band’s guitarist himself a cycling fan. He has also been involved in social projects in townships in Cape Town, visiting and training with a cycling school to give something back to the sport.
Johannes loves the outdoors – “I have problems resting!”- and is often found climbing, hiking and doing other sports when not on the bike.
