Joining Team Sunweb is a journey of discovery for Franziska. Coming from a very successful junior career in mountain biking, the young German is ready to take the step to the elite level of racing and on to the road.

“I am hoping to discover new things about myself. There are a lot of experts in this team and I hope to make big steps. I am starting from a really low level, after breaking my ankle last season so I hope with the help of the team I can get back to where I was.

“The team is really professional, and I like the communication; everything is clear, and I like the structure, I am a person who needs a structure because I like following a plan. This team suits me really well. I have the chance now to challenge myself on the road.”

Cycling is a family affair for the 19-year-old, with her parents and siblings all on the bike, racing and training. Her brother was a pro cyclist too, on the road. Thanks to her mountain-bike skills and that is she is a self-confessed perfectionist, Franziska classes herself as an all-rounder who can both climb and mix it up in the sprint, and prides herself with riding smart in the bunch where positioning is key.

“I love the feeling of freedom, the speed, being outside and putting everything I have in to my bike. Breaking my ankle was a really hard time for me, but I have big goals and every time I think about it, I remember those. I don’t want to stop before I reach them. That is my motivation.”

Off the bike Franziska does what any 19-year-old would, she loves to hang out with friends, and is planning to start studying too alongside her racing and training commitments.
