“Super proud” is how Edo Maas feels joining Team Sunweb. Despite interest from other teams, it was a simple choice for the 18-year-old to join a “prestigious” team and can’t wait to get stuck in amongst world-class staff and riders.
And with the E3 Harelbeke 2017 junior title to his name, he is determined to make an impact.
Sociable, honest, determined and ambitious, Edo first started riding at the age of 11 after a friend in school took up the sport. On his first bike ride, he crashed over a fallen tree. But that did not stop the young Dutchman. He started riding laps, racing and training and soon joined a local club, Despite being “really bad” at first, he soon improved, persevered and now loves the feeling of racing.
Edo harbours ambitions of becoming a Belgian Classics rider, and he loves watching the pro riders tackling “beautiful” races he believes suit him. And with a third place at E3 Harelbeke Junior, a fourth at Paris Roubaix Juniors and sixth at La Philippe Gilbert Juniors this season, it is no wonder he caught the attention of the development program. Now he hopes to improve tactically, and gain experience riding as a team.
Away from cycling, Edo studies physiotherapy and will balance that qualification alongside training. He also enjoys seeing his friends and catching up with them.
