Chad has loved cycling for as long as he can remember. He started building ramps on his driveway with his brother on starter bikes, before creating bigger jumps on his BMX in the street. Before long he was racing.

“I got carried away. I gave up baseball, I was not so good, and cycling became my new competitive outlet. Cycling is direct competition like a chess game – there are so many different tactical angles of it, as well as being a test of fitness. It’s as much competition against yourself as it is against others.”

A “durable” rider, Chad loves hard courses, as long as they aren’t too brutally steep. He has proven he can endure hard races, completing eight grand tours: “They can take me pretty much anywhere and I can handle it”.

Next season, he is already targeting more tough racing: “I’d love to help Tom however I can, I’ve loved being part of his grand tour successes. Personally, I am focused on the national time trial title, after a near miss last year.”

Now in his third season with Team Sunweb, Chad believes his defining quality is his introversion: “I love peace and quiet and a chance to think.” An intelligent rider, he is curious, likes to seek out new things and learn, and harbours a mentality that suits the team’s.

“Team Sunweb is committed to development at all stages of the career, and their philosophy matches mine – it is how I became a professional. I can race the best races against the best riders in the world as a support rider and also get the occasional opportunity for myself. It really is the full package.”

Chad was one of the riders involved in a car crash while training in Spain in 2016, and it was a mental battle to get back on a bike.

“I had to be very mentally tough, but I was determined to make it happen. I was constantly overcoming fear every step of the way. Riding, riding in traffic, racing. It’s a dangerous job and after a crash like that you become very aware of it. I am still here, racing, because I want to fulfil my true potential and I don’t think I’ve reached it yet.”

Away from racing, Chad likes to embark on a long end-of-season ride. This year he rode 343 kilometres, with 6500 metres of elevation, riding for a total of 12 hours. Away from cycling Chad enjoys reading, hiking with his wife Kate, drinking coffee, and playing the piano.
