One of the coaches at the 2017 Giro d’Italia, Aike Visbeek helped implement years of intricate planning into the three-week race, which saw Team Sunweb take their first Grand Tour GC victory.

“It was a hard-fought victory in difficult circumstances. It came through great teamwork from both riders and staff.”

His role in the team focuses on coaching. As well as a coach at races, Aike also personally coaches seven WorldTour riders on the team and is a member of Team Sunweb’s Anti-Doping Committee. Before joining the team Aike raced himself at a semi-professional level, with a knee injury forcing him to end his cycling career on the bike early. After this, he focused on general management and at 24-years-old, he took his first job as a team manager.

“Working with ambitious athletes in a demanding setting challenges and motives me.”

Aike’s love for the sport started at a young age, and at just six years old he would watch and follow bike races. “I love the speed and the ever-changing race scenarios. The fact that it happens across all different stages, from cobbles to the Alps to the desert, cyclists race everywhere.”

On his days off Aike could be a little hard to track down; “I tend to spend time between Stockholm and Amsterdam and enjoy being out alone in nature cutting up trees and working on my property.”

A driven and ambitious leader in character, Aike thrives in the “Keep Challenging” environment at Team Sunweb. “We’re highly structured, goal orientated and always looking for ways to improve. I most enjoy encouraging riders to get the best out of themselves and the team.”
