Chris Hamilton 6th on the stage and GC, securing best young rider

Tour Down Under

With two times up Willunga Hill inside the final 25 kilometres, including the stage finish at the top on the second time up the climb, the final stage of Tour Down Under was set to be an explosive one and it didn’t disappoint.

After the day’s seven-man group was brought back just as the road began to rise on the first time up Willunga, Team Sunweb brought GC-leader Chris Hamilton into position for the expected fireworks.

Team Sunweb coach Luke Roberts said: “We expected a few teams to put the pressure on the first time up the climb already, which was exactly the case and we had our guys ready for that. It was a little bit windy so they needed to be protected well, Max, Johannes and Cees did a great job in doing so, positioning them really well for the climb.”

After the climb Team Sunweb still had Chris, Jai Hindley, Michael Storer and Cees Bol in the peloton of around 70 riders, but as soon as the bunch hit the second ascent of Willunga Hill, the attacks came in thick and fast and the peloton began to fracture once again.

Luke continued: “Chris showed really good legs on the final and tried to follow Richie’s attacks. He did a great climb to finish 6th on the stage and GC, and secure to white jersey. All in all we’re really happy with the performance from the young team here this week. A result like this is a big credit to them.”

After the podium presentation, a happy Chris Hamilton said: “I couldn’t have done it without the support of my team. We came here with a GC goal and to be inside the top 10 would have been within my expectations. To come out with the result I have, I’m just stoked. The plan was for Max to look after me today and I spent 115 of the 150 kilometre stage on his wheel – he was an amazing support as were the rest of the team. The guys looked out for me all week and I’m massively thankful for that. The jersey is a huge bonus as well – we came here for a GC result and to come away with this is amazing. I won’t forget standing on that podium just now.”
