Final stage 2 kick proves tough for Team Sunweb

Tour Down Under

It was a three-rider breakaway that animated the early stages of day two Down Under, with the trio extending a three minute advantage in the opening kilometres. The catch was made early at 50 to go and another rider immediately seized the opportunity to go clear solo.

With temperatures soaring up to 40 degrees and the stage shortened as a result of the extreme heat, Team Sunweb remained tucked in the bunch keeping cool and preserving energy to set sprinter Max Walscheid up for the final.

“The race was easy and went pretty well. Going into the final we found each other and were organised early on. After some very hectic moments at around 10 kilometres to go, we had to change plans, but adapted very well to the situation. We came back to formation and they guys were able to bring me, with a concentrated effort, to the front. ” explained Max after the finish.

With sprint team’s well organised, it wasn’t a day for them to be denied and the inevitable catch to the lone leader was made with three kilometres to the finish.

In good position for the sprint, a crash inside the final kilometres wreaked havoc, but Team Sunweb managed to stay out of trouble.

Max continued: “I felt pretty good, but unfortunately the last two kilometres were clearly harder than expected and I could not finish it off. My lead out did a great job again and we’re looking forward to going for it again at the 5th stage.”

Team Sunweb coach Luke Roberts explained:

“We saw some really good team work today. The guys set Max up for the final going into the last two kilometres with his lead-out really well, and both Michael and Chris safe in the bunch. There was a little kick in the final kilometre which proved to be too much for Max today, but the boys can be satisfied with their performance.

“Michael and Chris are both still up there in the GC and we look forward to the next two days where we expect things to shake up a little bit before another chance for Max on Saturday.”
