Asbjørn Kragh Andersen finishes 6th on final stage in Melbourne

Jayco Herald Sun Tour

The Jayco Herald Sun Tour concluded today with laps of a fast, four kilometre long circuit around the botanic gardens in Melbourne. Starting the day with two objectives, the team were focused on protecting Jai Hindley’s yellow jersey but also aimed to set up sprinter Alberto Dainese for the finale.

Due to the nature of the circuit it was a fast and furious race, with multiple attacks in the beginning of the stage. A group of eight riders managed to form the break of the day yet their advantage was never allowed to grow more than 45 seconds.

The team worked well at the front of the peloton with their two objectives in mind and coming into the final lap the race was all back together. With the pace incredibly high in the closing kilometres, the fight for position was fierce on the circuit. Coming into the fast and technical finale Asbjørn Kragh Andersen attempted to move Dainese towards the head of the bunch but the Italian was unable to follow his wheel. Kragh Andersen moved around some of those ahead of him in the last few hundred metres to claim a solid sixth place finish on the stage.

Hindley finished safely within the bunch and secured the overall title, with Michael Storer also finishing in the top ten on GC with seventh. It has been a great week of racing at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour with the team leaving the race with Hindley’s GC title, three stage wins, the KOM jersey and as winners of the team classification.

“With Jai going into the final stage with a ten second lead, the race wasn’t done so we had to be on our toes from the beginning and take control of the race,” explained Team Sunweb coach Luke Roberts at the finish. “An eight rider group went away and the guys did well to get the race under control and rode from the front and kept Jai well protected. Mitchelton came to help close it down for a bunch sprint and we hoped to set Alberto up for a sprint result today too. Unfortunately, we just missed the position into the final kilometre so a top result wasn’t possible but Asbjørn was able to take sixth. We achieved our goal to protect Jai’s position on the GC and take the overall win at the Tour. I’m really happy for the boys and it was a good team effort again today.”
