Wind and rain makes for a tough race at Ster van Zwolle

Ster van Zwolle

Strong wind and rain made for a chaotic day in the saddle for Development Team Sunweb’s first race of the season at Ster Van Zwolle. Almost from the flag drop the racing was intense and several groups of riders tried to break clear.

Turning into a headwind things calmed down and one lone rider set out in front but soon the road direction changed again and the race split to pieces. Niklas Märkl and debutant Casper van Uden rode strongly to make the front group, with Ludvig Anton Wacker and Tim Naberman in the chase group behind.

Things once again regrouped, before another exposed section saw the peloton split for good this time with around one hour of racing to go. Unfortunately, Märkl and Van Uden missed the split in the wind, with the front group going on to compete for the race win. Märkl, Naberman and Van Uden battled on in the tough conditions, crossing the line in the same group.

“From the start it was a really hectic and chaotic race,” expressed Märkl at the finish. “Casper and I were in front the whole day and we could stay in the first group of 30 guys. Then with around one hour to go there was a crucial moment where we were a bit too far back and our group split, and we missed the front group that went on to sprint for the win. In general I think we rode a good race for our first race of the season and we hope for more in the races to come.”

Team Sunweb coach Roy Curvers added: “It was a hard race, where the guys learned a lot. Casper was for in the mix for a good result for a long time but lost touch with a group that in the end sprinted for the victory, on the last dyke. Even though we don’t go home with a result today we learned a lot and we can look forward to the coming races with confidence.”
