Testing conditions make for a tough day at Slag om Norg

Slag om Norg

Development Team Sunweb were back in action today at the tricky one-day race of Slag om Norg. Known for its numerous sections of gravel roads and a route that is often affected by tricky weather conditions, the 2019 edition of the race was no different.

It was a fast and frenetic start with no breakaway able to form in the opening 60 kilometres of the day, with the peloton splitting and regrouping due to the wind. Both Edo Maas and Tim Naberman were active and attentive at the front, making the splits. At around 90 kilometres into the day a break of two had finally got clear, with Maas and Naberman in the main group following them, with Nils Sinschek and Ludvig Anton Wacker in the group behind that.

The race would regroup somewhat, before Naberman rode strongly and managed to get into an attack of 13 riders that got clear and gained an advantage of around 35 seconds. However, as the kilometres ticked by, the frequency of the gravel sections increased and made for a tough day in the saddle. At around 50 kilometres to go, Naberman dropped out of the lead group and wouldn’t make it back to the head of the race, ultimately finishing as the team’s first rider home on the day.

“The crosswind at the start of the race and the gravel in the finale made it a really hard day today,” explained Naberman at the finish. “Edo and I were up in the front the whole day and I made it in the first echelon when we entered the final, where all the gravel sections started. After that it was then a big fight to make it to the finish. We both ended up in a small group that we crossed the line in.”

Team Sunweb coach Bennie Lambregts added: “It was a hard race with a lot of crosswind. Even before the gravel sections it was broken in the peloton, with Edo and Tim in the main group at the front. After roughly 110 kilometres a break went with Tim in, which was good. Once onto the local laps where most of the gravel sections were, Tim eventually dropped out the front group. He drifted back to the group where Edo was and they rode to the finish together. It was a tough day for the young guys in hard conditions and we’ll take some learning points from the race going forward.”
