Salmon wins polka dot jersey at Tour of Slovakia

The final day of this year’s Tour of Slovakia proved to be successful, as Martin Salmon defended his polka dot jersey, ending the race as winner of the King of the Mountains classification.

Beginning in Hlohovec, the race undertook a 142.1 kilometre route to the finish at Senica, taking in a total of five categorised climb; posing a threat to the lead of Martin in the polka dot jersey. However, despite an animated beginning to proceedings, the team worked hard and managed to close down the threat of riders to the King of the Mountains classification; ensuring that the day’s breakaway did not endanger Martin’s lead.

Unlike previous stages, the peloton kept the escapees on a tighter rein, allowing them only a couple of minutes at most throughout the day. As a result, the bunch swept up the break in the final kilometres with relative ease, setting up the sprint finish anticipated to draw this year’s race to a close. Best placed rider on the day was Niklas Märkl at 20th, while Leon Heinschke secured 12th overall on the general classification and Martin Salmon won the polka dot jersey.

Team Subweb Coach Sebastian Deckert: “It was really nice to see all of the guys jumping for early breakaway moves, working hard to ensure that the right group were allowed to get away. This paid off well for us, as at the end of this race, we are able to celebrate retaining this beautiful jersey.”

“It was a good week of racing with long stages and good terrain, we can be satisfied with the team performance for this young team at a 2.1 race, which are always special when we have so many big teams; it is a different kind of racing and we adapted day to day. Overall, we are happy that Martin could secure the jersey as King of the Mountains and it was a great effort from Leon being 12th on the GC too.”
