ABOUT Ruth Winder

Team Sunweb has added another American rider to its roster for 2018, with the signing of 24-year-old Ruth Winder, who looks forward to joining her former teammate and Coryn Rivera again. “I’m really excited to join the team and race full-time in Europe. This is a team full of strong riders and I’m eager to learn from all my team mates, they seem like the best team during races. They go into a race with a clear plan and always have a good time on the bike and at the same time achieve their goals, which is the perfect combination. I want to be a good team mate and help to achieve the team goals. I really developed my climbing skills last year and hope this brings added value to the team.”

Before Ruth started cycling at age 15, she played football and rode horses. Her parents loved cycling and have always been a big inspiration. They took Ruth to the national junior championships in Oregon and she unintentionally won that race. This marked the start of her successful cycling career.

Winder was a track rider for two years and when she switched to road racing again in 2017, she moved to Colorado to be able to train in the mountains. She collected a bundle of strong results last season after finishing 2nd at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, 3rd at the American national championships, two stage victories at the Tour de Feminin alongside both the general classification and points jersey. She also finished in an impressive 2nd place in the GC at the Lotto Belgium Tour.

Winder is known for her aggressive racing style, a common trait of Team Sunweb’s women’s program. Ruth likes to attack, has a big engine and is a complete all-round talent. The social aspects of cycling are also an appeal to Winder. “You build a social community when you’re cycling and meet lots of new people. Creating memories really fits to me.”
