ABOUT Marc Hirschi

Marc Hirschi’s father was a keen cyclist, and cycling was always on the TV as he grew up. As Marc got older, his father took him out on bike rides and soon his love for the sport was born. Mountain biking was Marc’s first passion and at age 14 he started competing in races. Soon, the smaller races turned into bigger races and at age 15, Marc got his first road bike. Just two years later he began to compete on the national scene, before joining Development Team Sunweb at the beginning of 2018.

19-year-old Hirschi has already taken some impressive results in the early stages of his career. In 2017, he took the victory at the Tour du Jura, finished 3rd and 8th at the European road race and time trial championships respectively, as well as finishing 6th at Piccolo Lombardia.

“I love going out on the bike, it gives me such a sense of freedom. Road races also fascinate me; I love competing to get better and nothing beats the race feeling.”

The focus on the development of young talent within the team was a huge appeal to Hirschi, who’s main focus for the upcoming years is to strengthen his ability on the bike and develop a more cohesive tactical knowledge. “I chose Team Sunweb because they’re such a good team for young riders. They really look at development in the long-term; this was most important to me.”

Despite the early stage of his career, Hirschi already has some clear highlight moments. “Competing in the junior world championships riding the Madison on the track was amazing. My first UCI win at Tour du Jura was special too, I won’t ever forget that feeling.”

With an impressive list of palmares and experience at such a young age, there is much room for this Swiss talent to make further developments at Team Sunweb. His biggest ambition is to win the GC at the Tour de France, but for now he wants to focus on progression during stage races.

"Without my father, I wouldn’t be a cyclist today"
