ABOUT Lucinda Brand

Lucinda Brand started racing in 2009 but before that, she learned about every detail of the human body during her studies. “This knowledge coupled with my interest in training techniques has helped me to develop as a cyclist.” Since 2017 Lucinda has been on the front line of Team Sunweb, bringing a lot of experience and knowledge to the team. Her team mates praise her for the extensive preparation in everything she does. She’s an intelligent team captain, who’s capable of adapting to changes in circumstances quickly. Lucinda always has a plan.

In her career so far, Lucinda has secured an impressive list of results. Among these are two wins at the national championships, several world championship medals and wins at the Energiewacht Tour and the Ladies Tour of Norway. Lucinda is famous for her solo breakaways and she is a rider that the peloton definitely don’t want to let get away. In 2017, she impressed many by winning both Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and a stage at the Giro Rosa but her ultimate moment of happiness was winning the team time trial at the world championships. “Winning a race while we weren’t one of the favourites gave us such an intense feeling of happiness. The atmosphere in Norway was fantastic, I’ve never seen such a bunch of enthusiastic people cheering at us. The whole day was an unforgettable experience for me and the team.”

This 28-year-old Dutch rider is not only successful on the road, but also in cyclo-cross. In both 2016 and 2017, she won the silver medal at the European Championships. You only have to mention the word ‘cyclo-cross’ to see a twinkle in her eyes. “Cyclo-cross is quite new for me, there’s still so much to learn which is great fun. I still like road races because they’re less predictable and it’s more about tactics and a team effort.”

Despite the successes she already had, Lucinda is still ambitious and eager to continue to improve. “I can certainly make progression. Mentally I want to become stronger, especially when things get tough. Together with my new trainer I’m going to work on every little aspect to better myself.”

"Winning when you’re not a favourite is amazing"
