Strong collective ride sees Development Team Sunweb place three riders in top ten

Ronde de l'Isard

Development Team Sunweb were back in action today in the south of France with stage one of the Ronde de l’Isard, a relatively flat 127 kilometre route from Toulouse to Salies du Salat.

Despite the gentle nature of the terrain, it was to be an extremely tough day of non-stop action. Following multiple attempts to form an early breakaway, Nils Sinschek and Leon Heinschke managed to inflitrate themselves in the successful move. Not long after, a large chasing group containing Jarno Mobach and Enzo Leinjse joined forces with the break, forming an even bigger leading group.

Due to the sheer size of the breakaway, some riders became restless, knowing that the group was simply too big to cooperate. Once again Sinschek went on the offensive taking four riders with him. They managed to build a substantial advantage and sustain it all the way to the line. In spite of his combative ride, Sinschek finished fourth in the reduced sprint. Mobach and Heinschke crossed the line soon after in fifth and tenth respectively, rounding off an extremely solid team display.

“It was quite a flat stage today and we wanted to be aggressive as a team,” said Sinschek after the finish. “Especially considering what happened on the opening day of the Tour de Savoie. The whole team performed really well. Leon and I were able to get into an early group of 11 riders before Enzo and Jarno bridged in a later group. There were then more attacks from the group that I followed, and eventually I was part of a group of five that got clear, although one guy was soon dropped. In the inermediate sprint I attacked to take some bonus seconds but it was too far out to go until the finish. Coming into the finale I tried to attack again but was followed by two of the guys, with one of them dropping. I maybe could have kept pushing and dragged the other two to the line but we sat up and the fourth guy made it back. In the sprint it was quite chaotic and I chose the wrong side to come around and couldn’t get any bonus seconds which was a bit disappointing. Overall though, it was a great ride from the guys today. We can be really proud of how we raced and to get three guys in the top ten on the stage. We’ll keep fighting hard in the coming days and try to go for another top result.”

Team Sunweb coach Bennie Lambregts added: “It was a very hot stage today with a very fast pace from the start. 47 kilometres were covered in the first hour! We can be proud of the aggressive way of riding and their positioning. They were always in the right place and following the correct moves. It was a very good performance.”
