Leon Heinschke 7th and Niklas Märkl 10th in Porec Trophy sprint

Poreč Trophy

After a strong showing at Umag Trophy on Wednesday where Niklas Märkl took third place, the team were back in action today for the Porec Trophy. A hilly circuit awaited the bunch and with numerous opportunities to attack, it was set to be a fast and aggressive day of riding.

A two rider breakaway eventually formed after lots of attacks and the race settled into a rhythm. However, the duo were only allowed a gap of just over two minutes and with 55 kilometres to go the race was back together.

More attacks followed yet again but with nothing able to stick, attention soon turned to the sprint finish. The team worked well to move Märkl up ahead of the finish but came to the front too early on the long uphill drag to the line in what was a headwind, and were ultimately swamped by the other teams. In the sprint, it was Leon Heinschke who was first home for the team in seventh place, with Märkl not far behind in tenth.

“I think the whole team did a good job today,” explained Märkl at the finish. “We were always present in the front and could cover the attacks. A break went away but it got caught quite early and that kept the pace high in the bunch. Into the last laps, more jumping started in the peloton that we were able to follow so we then focused on the lead out. We were well together as a team for the lead out but we were a bit too early in the wind and had to burn too much energy before the finish. In the end Leon was seventh and I finished in tenth.”

Team Sunweb coach Bennie Lambregts added: “It was a controlled race with not a lot happening throughout the afternoon. It was difficult to stay together in the last few kilometres, as it was uphill and on a wide road with a bit of headwind, so the guys got overtaken by some other teams as we were on the front too early. The guys did a good job sticking and working together today though, so we’ll work on it and take it into the Istrian Spring Trophy next.”
