Max Walscheid sprints to 5th in Poland on a sad day for cycling

Tour de Pologne

The third day of racing at the Tour de Pologne offered the sprinters one last guaranteed chance of stage success before the race heads to the hills tomorrow. The stage took a formulaic pattern with a trio of riders escaping from the flag drop, quickly building up an advantage over the bunch. Just like the opening two stages, the peloton were happy with this situation and the sprint teams worked at the front to slowly reel back in the breakaway throughout the stage.

Inside the last 25 kilometres of racing the bunch hit the finish circuit, which they would complete four laps of. Conditions were initially quite treacherous with the roads slick from rain earlier in the day but as the laps ticked by the sun came out and the roads dried out. The breakaway still held onto a 16 second advantage going into the final lap which ensured a fast finale. There was a big fight for position within the bunch as the race entered the closing kilometres, with the team attempting to move up Max Walscheid for the sprint. A technical section stretched out the bunch and Walscheid found himself in around 20th wheel with around 500 metres to go. Opening up his sprint early, he came past several riders but as the opposition kicked again near the finish, he wasn’t able to overtake any more; settling for a good fifth place finish on the day.

Speaking after the stage Team Sunweb coach Marc Reef said: “Today was again a chance for the sprinters, normally the last one in the race and we aimed again to win with the stage with Max. We chose to wait and come late to the front on the final lap, but in the end we lacked the power to execute it fully. Max still did a very strong last two kilometres and in the end finished in fifth place. It’s a shame because more was possible.”

Unfortunately, the cycling world was shook by the tragic news of the passing of Lotto Soudal’s Bjorg Lambrecht as a result of a crash during today’s stage in Poland. Everyone at Team Sunweb sends our deepest condolences to his family, friends and team. Rest in peace, Bjorg.
