Max Walscheid 6th in fast finale at Tour de Pologne

Tour de Pologne

The second stage at the Tour de Pologne served up a parcours very similar to that of the first stage, with a mostly flat route and a couple of hills throughout the afternoon. A breakaway duo managed to escape from the bunch within the opening few hundred metres and the peloton were happy to let them go.

Like yesterday, the peloton were always in control and after allowing the breakaway a six minute lead, they started to reel them back in. Everything was back together just after the peloton took the bell for the last lap of the finish circuit in Katowice. The team worked well to position Max Walscheid near the front of the bunch in the closing kilometres ahead of the downhill finale. There was a big fight for position and with the speeds high, Walscheid was a little boxed in during the sprint and wasn’t able to open up his effort fully until near the line. He finished fast and came past a few riders, ending the day with a good sixth place.

“Today I’m not really happy with the result,” said Walscheid at the finish. “It worked out perfectly for us all day and the team supported me really well to protect me in the technical finish and I was able to hold the wheels in the finale. I was perfectly positioned going into the last kilometre but I was blocked and couldn’t show at all what I had in the legs. It’s disappointing because a lot more was possible than the sixth place. In the end I have to take the positives and we can definitely make it tomorrow and get a good result in the sprint.”

Team Sunweb coach Marc Reef added: “It was a sprint day in Poland and we had the goal to go with Max in the finale. The team kept him in position during the first part of the final lap, before he went on his own and followed the wheels. In the last final straight Max waited a bit too long, was blocked and couldn’t do a full sprint at all. It’s unfortunate and frustrating because more was possible than a sixth place finish today. We will try again tomorrow though!”
