Development Team Sunweb’s under 23 German road race champion Max Kanter has secured the stage two win at Olympia’s Tour today, out-sprinting fellow fast men after a fantastic team effort in the closing kilometres.
After stretching their lead out to just under four minutes, an early two man break was brought back as the race headed towards it’s final with team’s looking to position their fast men for the finish. Development Team Sunweb had ambitions in the sprint with Max Kanter, focusing on positioning him through stage two’s narrow roads. Approaching the final corner in great position, Max was able to open up a small gap over the peloton, holding out to take the stage two victory.
Max said: “Towards the final and after the break were brought back it got really nervous in the peloton, but we managed to stay together well. In the last kilometre Niklas and Joris did really a strong pull to bring me in a good position for the last corner at 250 metres to go. I started my sprint perfectly in a great position and was able to finish it off with the victory. I’m really happy about our performance today and we can look forward to the next stages.”
Team Sunweb coach Tom Veelers said: “When the break came back, the team were riding well together and they were already implementing the plan we made upfront to be together on all of the narrow roads. Leon did a great job positioning the guys, and Niklas took care of the positioning in the last kilometres. He did a strong effort with Max on his wheel and Joris was the last support going towards the last corner. Max had a lot of speed and coming out of the corner he already had a five metre gap on the rest of the field. He held out to take the win which is fantastic – hopefully we still have more to come.”
