Team Sunweb finish Hammer Limburg 4th overall after valiant 3rd place Chase effort

Hammer Limburg

With solid performances in the Hammer Limburg Climb and Sprint, Team Sunweb started the Hammer Chase as the fourth outfit to go down the ramp in the finalist group. Ahead of the riders today were four laps of the same course that they covered on the opening day of racing in the Sprint. The pancake flat route would lend itself well to some really fast action throughout the afternoon and a good fight between the different teams.

Some solid riding from the guys on the opening laps kept them close to the teams ahead, with the gaps staying similar to what they were at the beginning of the race. With the other teams down to four riders, Team Sunweb utilised their good pacing strategy and began to catch the podium positions within the final lap. Almost making the junction around the last corner, it would prove to be just too hard a task, with the team finishing in fourth place overall after their valiant effort; coming home only four seconds behind second place.

The team’s effort saw them finish with the third best time on the day in the Hammer Chase, a good reward for a strong team performance.

“I think we rode at the perfect pace today; we found a really good speed which we could hold until the end, and no one needed to skip turns,” explained Max Walscheid. “We emptied ourselves totally and did a very good ride; we can be really satisfied with the result on the day, coming third in the Chase. In the end it was super close and we delivered a really good show for the fans but unfortunately just kept our fourth place overall.”

Team Sunweb coach Matt Winston added: “It was a good ride today from the guys. We set off well with a strong first lap and we held Jumbo in the next two laps, as they caught Bora ahead of them. We held the gap until the last lap when the guys went full gas, they were fully committed and it was really good to see. We managed to catch Bora and Jumbo in the last 500 metres but just crossed the line in fourth place, which was a shame after the effort the guys did to make the catch. I think it was a really good all-round performance from the guys, with the five of them doing strong turns all the way to the finish. In the end we took third place in the Chase and ended Hammer Limburg fourth overall. It’s a shame to come so close to the overall podium but it is what it is and the guys can be really proud of their effort today.”
