Team Sunweb’s Joris Nieuwenhuis put in a valiant effort at the Krawatencross which took place in Lille today, finishing the race in 8th place.
While the world champion led the field with a healthy advantage, there was a hard fight going on behind for the rest of the podium places. Joris held strong in the chasing group, but on the final lap two riders nipped ahead of the group to snatch the podium places. After a week feeling under the weather, Joris finished the day in a solid 8th place, with the Superprestige in Hoogstraten still to come tomorrow.
Joris said: “I was a bit surprised today. I caught a small cold after the worlds and I wasn’t sure how I was going to go. I had a good start and hoped to ride away with a small group, but things stayed together and in the end I made some mistakes while riding for 4th place. Tomorrow will be another hard day, so let’s see what it brings.”
