Felix Gall solos to victory on Stage 2 of Istrian Spring Trophy

Istrian Spring Trophy

With a strong solo attack in the final kilometres of stage 2 of the Istrian Spring Trophy, Development Team Sunweb rider Felix Gall raced to victory taking the overall race lead with it.

The stage was raced at a high tempo throughout with no real break forming before the final decisive climbs in the day. The team rode a strong race together throughout to look after Felix and Florian Stork ahead of the final, before Felix made his decisive move on the final climb to the line. The win makes it two stage wins in three days for the team after a dominating performance in the opening prologue where the team finished first, second and fifth.

Before heading to the podium, Felix talked through the race: “It was a very fast day from the beginning with lots of attacking and never really a breakaway so there was never an easy part to the race. The team did a great job covering all the attacks and in the final on the penultimate climb Niklas did a good job positioning Florian and I. The pace was very high earlier than we expected but it was good for us as we were already at the front so it was less stressful at the final climb.

“The pace was high going into the climb and in the middle after a few attacks I made my counterattack and got away immediately and made it to the finish solo. I’m really happy with this – I was hoping to be in such good shape already but you never know, it’s still just my first race. It’s my first win as an U23 rider for the team and so it’s a really nice feeling.”

Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert added: “It was a tough day today and a hard fight for over 100 kilometres. It was on the second to last climb where it split completely and we had four guys there in a group of 30 which was good. On the last climb Leon unfortunately had a puncture but Florian and Felix were up there and played it really well together. When Felix went away Florian was protecting behind. It was a super strong performance from Felix to win the stage and now we look forward to tomorrow’s final stage.”
