As The Tour of Guangxi concluded with another rainy bunch sprint in Guilin, Team Sunweb’s Max Walscheid sprinted to 5th place.
Team Sunweb’s Lennard Hofstede joined the day’s six man move after a fast opening 20 kilometres saw multiple attempts try their luck at the front of the race. The break went on to establish a three minute advantage, but with the sprinter’s teams keen for another fast kick to the line, they kept their lead in check throughout the day.
The peloton increased their pace and made the catch with five kilometres to go and immediately the battle for position began amongst the sprint trains. The rain made for a tricky finale, with Team Sunweb delivering Max Walscheid into position to take 5th place in another bunch sprint.
Team Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek said: “The guys did a good job today. We had Lennard in the early break and when that was brought back, we concentrated on our last chance for Max in the sprint. The guys brought him into position but he was too far back on the last corner and didn’t have enough to come forward for a top result. We can look back on a consistent week here in China to close our season, with good team work from all of the guys.”
