Lucinda Brand takes great 2nd place on final stage at the Giro Rosa

Giro d'Italia Internazionale Femminile

The final day of racing at the Giro Rosa saw yet another attacking display of cycling. With only one categorised climb on the route, it was a fast day in the saddle with numerous teams and riders wanting to get clear and fight for the stage win from the breakaway. Leah Kirchmann and Floortje Mackaij were active at the head of the race and both were involved in attacks but they were never allowed any leeway by the peloton.

A duo did manage to get clear but everything was back together as the peloton took on the final categorised climb of the race. The bunch thinned out on the short ascent and the team worked well to keep Lucinda Brand positioned near the front of the peloton. Over the top of the climb there was some disorganisation in the bunch and a solo rider attacked, quickly gaining a gap of over 20 seconds. However, the peloton soon began to chase and going into the tricky uphill finale the race was back together.

The short but steep climb to the line was certainly a sting in the tail, and Brand produced a strong kick after what was a tough week of racing, finishing the stage with a great second place. With bonus seconds on the line and some gaps in the peloton behind, Brand moved up one spot on GC to end the race in sixth place.

Juliette Labous started the day with a commanding lead in the best young rider classification and after navigating the stage safely, she won the classification, getting to take home the jersey after ten testing days of racing at the Giro Rosa.

“It was a super fast stage,” explained Brand. “A big break went, which Floortje was in, but some teams were not happy with it and it was brought back. We had a really fast lead out into the GPM and because it was close to the finish, everyone knew they had to be in front so it was a hard sprint to be in position. It was the same going down into Udine which was very hectic. I was in a good position and just had to sprint really hard in the difficult last 200 metres. I gave it my all and I’m happy to come second. In general I think we did a really good Giro Rosa; winning the young jersey and we had three podium places. It is just a pity we couldn’t win a stage as I think the team deserved it because of the way we rode, we were aggressive all race. The team also helped Juliette and I all the time and it was a really impressive ten days of racing by everyone. We can look back on the Giro Rosa and be proud of how we rode here.”

Team Sunweb coach Nicolas Marche added: “Everybody was really motivated to finish well after yesterday’s bad luck. Leah and Floortje fought all day to try and make the breakaway but nothing was allowed to go clear. We were also focussed on GC and Lucinda managed to take two bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint. With around 25 kilometres to go we decided to go all in for Lucinda on the uphill finish. The team did a great job to set her up and Lucinda delivered a strong result to come in second place and she also moved up to sixth place on GC which was great. It was a really good week overall; in the end cycling is cycling and you can always have bad luck but the team had a positive mindset all week and that’s very important.”
