Today’s racing at the Giro dell’Emilia saw the peloton faced with a mostly flat 98 kilometre route. However, there would be a sting in the tail with the famous two kilometre long climb of San Luca, featuring ramps of over 14 percent, awaiting the riders at the end of the day.
The flatter parcours in the opening part of the race saw several attacks but it was difficult for anyone to escape. Eventually, one solo rider broke clear but the peloton was always in control and coming into the last 20 kilometres the bunch had made the catch. Attention then switched to the tough climb to the line and Julia Soek and Franziska Koch did well to position Liane Lippert and Floortje Mackaij, ahead of the lower slopes.
The stinging gradients immediately took their toll on the bunch and the race began to split up. Lippert rode prominently in the first selection, delivering a strong ride on the steep slopes. Part of a group of four riders that gained a small gap over a chasing selection, Lippert dug deep all the way to the line but she just couldn’t follow the infernal pace set at the head of the race, finishing with a strong fifth place on the day.
