Liane Lippert with strong 5th atop famous San Luca climb at Giro dell’Emilia

Giro dell'Emilia Internazionale Donne Elite

Today’s racing at the Giro dell’Emilia saw the peloton faced with a mostly flat 98 kilometre route. However, there would be a sting in the tail with the famous two kilometre long climb of San Luca, featuring ramps of over 14 percent, awaiting the riders at the end of the day.

The flatter parcours in the opening part of the race saw several attacks but it was difficult for anyone to escape. Eventually, one solo rider broke clear but the peloton was always in control and coming into the last 20 kilometres the bunch had made the catch. Attention then switched to the tough climb to the line and Julia Soek and Franziska Koch did well to position Liane Lippert and Floortje Mackaij, ahead of the lower slopes.

The stinging gradients immediately took their toll on the bunch and the race began to split up. Lippert rode prominently in the first selection, delivering a strong ride on the steep slopes. Part of a group of four riders that gained a small gap over a chasing selection, Lippert dug deep all the way to the line but she just couldn’t follow the infernal pace set at the head of the race, finishing with a strong fifth place on the day.

“It was pretty flat today until the final climb so we took it easier in the beginning, staying in the bunch, with Franziska covering any dangerous moves,” explained Lippert at the finish. “The girls did really well to protect me until the final climb. They did a really good lead out, we communicated really well and it was fun to ride together with them today. Coming onto the climb I was near the front in the first corner after the girls’ good work. From then, it was just hard from the bottom until the top, the pace was really high, and I was in a bit of a survival mode. I managed to get an advantage with another three riders but on the steepest part I just couldn’t follow the wheels. I rode the finale on my own for fourth place but in the last 50 metres another rider came from behind and out-sprinted me, and at that point I was completely empty and couldn’t see her so wasn’t able to react. I think it’s a good result today and I beat a lot of other strong climbers. I’m happy with the team and how they rode, as well as the trust they had in me. I had a lot of fun riding with the girls today and we’re all looking forward to tomorrow.”

Team Sunweb coach Hans Timmermans added: “The race was exactly like we expected, with it quiet until the final five kilometres where it was really hectic. We did everything right in positioning, with Franziska and Julia doing well to bring Liane and Floortje into the top five at the bottom of the climb. It was then all out in the last two kilometres on the steep climb. Liane did a great job to finish fifth place on a climb like this against some strong riders as an under 23 rider. It’s good to see after her bad luck in the month of August that she was able to bounce back today with a strong result and finish the season in a good way. The team rode really well as a unit today so we can only be satisfied with the outcome and we’re looking ahead to tomorrow now.”
