Team Sunweb’s Simon Geschke abandons Vuelta a España before stage 18

Team Sunweb’s Simon Geschke is forced to abandon the Vuelta a España before its 18th stage after showing flu-like symptoms. Riding his 12th grand tour in Spain, Simon put in a strong performance over the three-week race supporting the team’s GC ambitions, and was also able to pick up a strong 8th and 9th in the race’s two time trials.

Simon said: “It’s never a nice feeling to leave a race, especially a grand tour. I always could proudly say that I finished all grand tours that I have started so far, but now I feel that my body is on the limit with this sickness and I have to listen to it. I still have some race days coming up this year so we decided it’s best to get some rest and get healthy first.”

Team Sunweb physician Anko Boelens said: “Simon hasn’t been feeling 100 percent for the past couple of days showing flu-like symptoms. We were hoping for him to be able to recover but unfortunately he hasn’t, so we’ve taken the decision to pull him from the race.”
