Team Sunweb are pleased to confirm two new arrivals to their Development Program, as Xandres Vervloesem (BEL) and Marius Mayrhofer (GER) join Team Sunweb from 2019.
With the recently announced Keep Challenging Center located in Sittard expected to be housed in Q1 of 2019, Team Sunweb’s Development program will have benefit from a campus combining a state-of-the-art elite sport living environment with high-end support to continue to turn cycling into a true team sport.
Marius Mayrhofer (GER)
After joining Team Sunweb’s Deutsche Talent Tage in 2018, the team saw a great fit between rider and team both on and off the bike. 1st at GP Bob Jungels, two stage wins at Course de la Paix, two stage wins at Oberösterreich Rundfahrt and a win at Trofeo comune di Vertova Memorial Petro Merelli amongst multiple top 10s throughout 2018; the 17-year-old 2017 junior German road champion has already shown his talent as a young rider and the team will develop his skills further throughout his two year contract.
Mayrhofer said: “The team’s philosophy was a real deciding factor for me when choosing a team. At such a young age I want to keep pushing myself to develop myself into a top class athlete and I believe that this is the perfect environment for me to be able to do so. I would like to continue to progress as a sprinter and a climber, but I also consider myself a good team player and hope to develop this and all of my qualities as a rider further.”
Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert (GER) said: “Marius joined our 2018 Deutsche Talent Tage and we got a really good impression of his physical capacities, but also his personality. He is a hard working, young, punchy all-rounder who has had several top performances in the junior category. After a broken collarbone in the middle of the season he came back strong and showed what kind of mentality drives him. We are looking forward to making the next steps in the future together with Marius.”
Xandres Vervloesem (BEL)
A new addition to Team Sunweb’s Development program for 2019, 18-year-old Vervloesem brings a wealth of climbing and stage race talent to the team and will wear the team’s colours for the upcoming two seasons. Notable performances as a young rider include a stage win and 2nd in the GC at the 2017 Ain Bugey Valromey Tour, a stage win and 3rd in the GC at the 2017 Aubel Thimister La Gleize, 2nd at the junior E3 Harelbeke this year, 3rd in the GC at GP General Patton and a mountains jersey win at Oberösterreich Juniorenrundfahrt.
Vervloesem said: “I found the structure of the team most attractive, this was the deciding factor when looking for the right team this year. The team has experts that work closely alongside riders to develop their talents and help them reach their potential. I am very pleased to have the opportunity and I have a lot of confidence that I will succeed in this way of development. I want to develop as an all-rounder, focusing across all disciplines, then when I’m older I will specialise.”
Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert (GER) said: “Xandres belongs to a really strong group of talented young riders and at his young age he has already shown himself with consistent performances. He is an all-rounder with strength on climbs and in stage races and with our support structure we believe that we have the perfect environment for him to make a good transition from junior level upwards.”
