Development Team Sunweb confirm more additions and extensions

Team Sunweb are pleased to welcome Ben Katerberg (CAN), Edo Maas (NED) and Ludvig Anton Wacker (DEN) to their Development program for the upcoming two seasons. Nils Eekhoff (NED) sees his contract with the team extended for an additional two years.

Ludvig Anton Wacker (DEN)

The young Danish talent Ludvig Anton Wacker will wear Team Sunweb’s Development program’s colours for the next two seasons. A strong rider in both the classics and sprints, Wacker took the win at the 2017 junior edition of Gent-Wevelgem, 10th at this year’s junior Paris-Roubaix as well as second and third in the sprints at Niedersachen Rundfahrt and Grand Prix Rübliland.

Wacker said: “It’s a huge pleasure to be able to ride with the team next year. Just to have the opportunity to speak with the team, let alone actually sign is amazing and something I’m extremely proud of. I would really like to focus on my sprinting abilities and believe that Team Sunweb is the best place to work on my skills as a rider and a person. Two years of riding abroad is quite unusual for someone from Denmark and I look forward to making them a really good two years. I will do my absolute best riding with the team whilst learning as much as I can so that one day I can hopefully make the step up to the WorldTour in the future.”

Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert (GER) said: “Ludvig is a fast and robust Danish rider. He has already shown his potential in sprints and the classic races; whilst focusing on these we will also develop him as an all rounder whilst he is still a young rider. The step up will be new and challenging for him, but we believe that Ludvig will be able to adapt well and show his abilities on this new level.”

Ben Katerberg (CAN)

18-year-old Ben Katerberg joins the team after racing on the Canadian and European scene over the past few years. He impressed with a double national title win at the junior Canadian championships this year as well as second places in the time trials at both the Tour de Gironde and Tour de L’Abitibi.

Katerberg said: “I’m really excited to join the team, take my development to the next level and really utilise the resources that the team has to offer which are unreal. It is very exciting to become a part of such a high caliber team that emphasises development. Team Sunweb’s Development program is a unique opportunity that I am extremely grateful to be a part of in 2019 and I’m really looking forward to this new adventure.”

Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert (GER) said: “We are looking forward to adding Canada’s powerhouse Ben Katerberg to our Development program. Ben used several races in Canada and Europe to show his potential as a bike rider and we believe that he will fit perfectly to our group of riders. He is thirsty to learn and grow, which is exactly what we are looking for when adding riders to our Development program. It will be a big step for him to race and live in Europe but we believe that Ben is ready for this challenge and the team will support him in every way.”

Edo Maas (NED)

After impressing at Team Sunweb’s annual Deutsche Talent Tage this year, Edo Maas joins Development Team Sunweb for the upcoming two racing seasons. His palmares include notable performances such as a win at the junior E3 Harelbeke in 2017, 4th at the 2018 junior Paris-Roubaix and a first and third place at Tour de Pays de Vaud.

Maas said: “I am more than proud to join Development Team Sunweb next season. After a difficult year I’m already really motivated for 2019. Meeting and getting to the know the team at the Deutsche Talent Tage earlier this year showed me that the team is the perfect environment for me to continue my development over the next few years.”

Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert (GER) said: “Edo joined our Deutsche Talent Tage this year and we got a really good impression of a young man who is a strong all rounder on the bike, and a proactive and cooperative person off the bike. After a good start to the season Edo had a hard crash which resulted in a break in racing. After a good recovery he is now on the up again and has been able to finish his season on a good level. We believe in Edo’s abilities and are looking forward to making the next steps together to hopefully bring him up to the elite level.”

Nils Eekhoff (NED)

2019 sees 20-year-old Eekhoff start his third season on Team Sunweb’s Development program. Over his two years with the team he has proven his strength taking wins at the 2017 Paris-Roubaix Espoirs, the prologue at the 2018 Istrian Spring Trophy as well as second at the U23 dutch time trial championships and Les Triptyque des Monts et Chateaux. Eekhoff has also shown his value to the team’s lead-out and has shown solid steps in his development whilst riding as a stagiaire for the WorldTour program this year.

Eekhoff said: “I’m excited for my contract extension with the Development program. It’s been two good years with a lot of learning and I feel good in the team. Now I’m looking forward to make the next big step in my development and I believe here is the perfect place to continue that.”

Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert (GER) said: “We are really happy to continue the journey with Nils who has had ups and downs in his two seasons with the team so far. At the end of last season Nils was involved in a crash which impacted him quite a lot, but it was good to see his determination to get back into shape. After good performances on the Development program he has been a stagiaire with the team this season and we believe this was a good next step for his progression. We are sure that there will be a continued upwards trend and that his hard work will pay off in the future.”
