Race report

Quiet day for Team Sunweb in California

Amgen Tour of California

Stage three of the Amgen Tour of California saw the riders take on a challenging 207 kilometres from Stockton to Morgan Hill. With a lot of climbing in the middle of the route, it meant the stage was on the limit for the sprinters and it was a day that would be difficult to control: making it a good stage for the breakaway.

Everyone in the peloton knew this and the racing was on from the gun, with several groups getting clear before being brought back. Cees Bol and Joris Nieuwenhuis made what seemed to be a promising group of 19, that managed to gain a 45 second gap after 30 kilometres of racing but they were ultimately brought back.

A duo counter attacked and got clear, with their gap quickly rising to over ten minutes. With neither rider a threat for the overall and no team willing to help the current race leader’s team in the chase, the race would be decided up the road. Cavagna attacked his breakaway companion on the toughest climb of the day and rode the last 60 kilometres of the day solo to victory. All the Team Sunweb riders came home safely, with Nieuwenhuis finishing in the main peloton with the rest of the team riding in with the second large group on the road.

“We focused on being in the break today,” explained Team Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek. “It was a hard start and a big group of around 20 riders went up the road. We had Cees and Joris in that move which was a very good situation for us. However, it was a long battle and in the end EF didn’t let break go. The duo then got away and it was controlled behind. Joris was in the first group and attempted to sprint for the minor places but he was a little out of position and couldn’t compete. We’ll look for more opportunities in the coming stages.”
