Rebounding from a tough few weeks following an injury to his leg, Development Team Sunweb’s Joris Nieuwenhuis rode a strong race to finish 3rd at the World Cup in Heusden-Zolder today.
Rain through the night made for a muddy course in Zolder. After a strong start, Joris Nieuwenhuis found himself 11 seconds ahead of a chasing group of four riders. Accelerations from the chasing group saw two riders catch up with him on the fourth lap. Keen to shake his companions off, Joris upped the tempo and managed to take a few metres over his rivals on the fifth lap. Still leading on the final lap, Joris fought a tough battle but was unable to shake the power of the two other riders in his company. The duo went on to fight for the victory as Joris powered through to third place.
After the race Joris said: “Today I finally felt good again. I am still having some problems with my leg but it was much better today. I pushed the whole race and in the end only two riders were better – they have been strong through the whole season so I’m already happy that I could finish 3rd today. The most important part of today is that I am finally feeling good, that was my goal and I’m pleased that I’ve succeeded with that. We will now see how I can improve towards the most important period of the year.”
