Team Sunweb’s young German sprinter Max Walscheid finished off a successful ZLM Toer today with a top five finish.

It was a fast and furious start to the race with a variety of breakaway attempts neutralised inside the first 15 kilometres. A six-rider breakaway finally managed some freedom from the peloton, going clear after 17 kilometres of racing. The break extended their lead to four minutes whilst Team Sunweb remained tucked inside the peloton for the last stage of racing. On the approach to the finish the GC teams took up the chase and it wasn’t long until the bunch had clawed back most of the breakaway’s advantage leaving just one rider solo out at the front. With 50 kilometres to go the peloton was complete, but another solo attack saw a rider spend some time ahead of the bunch. 15 kilometres to go and the pack was back together with teams starting their preparation for the expected bunch sprint. Team Sunweb fought for position at the front of the bunch and managed to position Max well for the sprint. He went on to finish in 5th place after what was a hectic finish.

“I had really good legs today,” said Max after the finish. “I believe that I could have taken a stronger result than 5th but the run in to the finish was really narrow and it was quite difficult to get a clear sprint to the line. Overall it’s been a good week of racing and I’m pleased with the results I have taken.”

Team Sunweb coach Luke Roberts added: “It was a relatively uneventful day that came down to a bunch sprint. Our lead out train didn’t get a very clear run into the finish but Max still managed to get 5th on the stage. Søren also managed to stay 5th on the GC – it’s good to see that he has his form back after his injury.”
