Team Sunweb’s U23 world CX champion, Joris Nieuwenhuis made his season debut wearing his rainbow jersey at Koksijde today.
After a powerful start, Joris held first position into the opening lap powering through the parcours’ numerous sand sections. Dropping back into third, it came down to a fight between the U23 and junior rainbow jerseys. After trying to hold his position, he was passed by a group of riders but continued to battle it out fighting for a top 10 placing. A group of three riders opened up a gap with one later attacking his companions, going on to take the victory. Joris finished 11th in his first world cup of the 2017 cyclo-cross season.
After the race Joris said: “Today wasn’t my day, I didn’t feel 100 percent and after two laps I was having trouble keeping pace. Yesterday’s race was really hard and I feel like that impacted on my performance today. Looking ahead, I will talk with my coaches and trainers to make a plan to improve for the coming races.”
Team Sunweb coach Herman Snoeijink said: “Joris had a really strong start today holding onto first position. He later dropped back after struggling in the sandy sections but put up a strong fight to stay close into the top 10. In his first world cup of the season we can be pleased with the result but will take some development points and implement them into his training over the coming weeks.”
