Just 10km closed 1000km of racing at the 52nd edition of Tirreno-Adriatico with the individual time trial today. After a week of working to protect Tom’s GC position, the team’s work was done and came down to an solo effort through San Benedetto del Tronto.
Tom Dumoulin was the fifth-to-last man out on the road today and a change in wind made for a more difficult ride for our Dutch time trial champion. He finished with a time of 11 minutes 41 seconds, 23 seconds down on the eventual stage winner. It wasn’t a good day for Søren Kragh Andersen as he crashed out on the stage and wasn’t able to go for a result.
Toms efforts throughout the week earned him a 6th spot in the general classification, just one minute and one second down on the race winner.
Team Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek said: “Today wasn’t the result that we had hoped for and it was a shame for Tom to drop a place in the GC. The wind direction changed which made for a tougher ride for those setting out later in the day. Søren also crashed out which meant that he couldn’t go for a result. In saying this, we can close a good week of racing satisfied with our performance. All of the guys worked well together and we are pleased with the cooperation that we have seen from within the team.”
