It was a day for a breakaway at the second stage of Tirreno Adriatico as six riders went clear after just under 10km of racing covered. Team Sunweb opted for a day in the peloton as they conserved energy for the tough finish up Pomarance. It was over for the early breakaway with 26km of racing remaining as they were reeled in by the chasing group. Inside the final kilometres of the race Team Sunweb riders were present at the front of the peloton as the pace began to increase. A group of four managed to break free from the pelotons reach, but only one could stay clear on the ascent to the finish. As they were absorbed by the peloton Tom Dumoulin launched a strong attack and went on to take second place.
“I didn’t feel great towards the beginning of the stage so I wasn’t so sure how the day would plan out,” explained Tom after the race finish. “In the final kilometres I was a little bit hesitant to make a move which probably cost me a lot. I wanted to attack but I decided to wait and that’s why I missed the winning move. In the end I was too late to reach Geraint but it’s good to be up there and I’m pleased to take second.”
Team Sunweb coach Aike Visbeek explained the plan for the day: “The focus was to place Tom in a good position on the last two climbs which worked out really well. As Tom wasn’t feeling great the plan was for him to go late. He put in a huge effort to take second place and we are all happy with the result. He also takes an important six seconds back for the GC, we will keep looking for opportunities for Tom throughout the remaining stages.”
