Team Sunweb’s Wilco Kelderman finished 4th at the Tour de Suisse today with Sam Oomen rolling home in 9th. After their efforts the duo now move up to 2nd and 3rd in the GC.
It was another fast and hectic start to the Tour de Suisse today, with no breakaway given any freedom until 67 kilometres had been raced. It was three riders that snapped the elastic opening up a three minute advantage. The remainder of the trio was swept up with seven kilometres to go, as a select group went on to contest the finale.
Sam Oomen and Wilco Kelderman remained in contention for Team Sunweb, and after a lone attacker was brought to heel in the final 500 metres, Wilco took 4th on the stage and Sam 9th. Wilco is now 2nd in the GC and Sam 3rd.
After the stage Wilco said: “I felt good today. The team were really focused and always good together in the front. They did a perfect job right up until the last climb, then it was up to me and Sam to finish it off. There was a lot of headwind on the climb so we gambled a little waiting for the sprint. I was just beaten on the line for 3rd but I’m happy with 4th. I had a good feeling today after a long period of training.”
Team Sunweb coach Morten Bennekou said: “Today was another good day for the team here. We aimed to be in the break but it wasn’t possible – no group was able to go clear for two hours. We had the goal to bring Wilco and Sam into the best possible position going into the last climb and then focused on refuelling for the final. On the final climb both Wilco and Sam were really strong, we were looking for a moment to attack but with too much head wind it ended in a sprint where Wilco took 4th and Sam 9th. With Wilco and Sam now both 2nd and 3rd in the GC we are in a very promising position for the upcoming stages.”
