Team Sunweb’s Michael Matthews sprinted to 4th place in stage 2 of the Tour de Suisse today, after the team put him into a good position.

The second stage of the Tour de Suisse took place today with the riders battling it out over 155km of a four lap hilly circuit around Frauenfeld. Attacks occured from the start and four riders went on to form a breakaway gaining a maximum time gap of 3 minutes and spent the majority of the time at the front of the race. Team Sunweb riders sat comfortably within the peloton during this period.

As the race entered the closing stages the peloton picked up the pace and the breakaway were caught with 25km remaining. Team Sunweb riders worked smoothly together to set Matthews up for the sprint finish. Matthews was able to open out his sprint and battled it out at high speed to clinch 4th place. Sam OOmen who took 35th place moved into the young leaders jersey.

After the stage, Team Sunweb coach Marc Reef said: The goal was to protect Wilco and sprint with Michael. On the last lap the bunch exploded and we were there in a bunch of 60 riders with our 5 riders. Wilco came in to help in the last 3km and then Søren did a pull for Michael in the last km, but Michael lost a bit of momentum, 3 riders came in fast from behind and he was knocked back to 4th. On top of this Sam is the now the leader of the young jersey.
