Team Sunweb’s Wilco Kelderman managed to avoid any trouble in the finale of stage five, retaining his 4th place in the general classification going into the tougher final stages.
Team Sunweb set out for another hot day in the saddle for the fifth stage of Tour de Pologne today. The day featured four categorised climbs, all of which came in the second half of it’s 130 kilometre route from Nagawczyna to Rzeszow. As soon as the flag dropped four riders were on the move. The quartet went on to extend their lead up to four minutes before the last rider was swept up by the bunch with just three kilometres to go. With the day’s climbs having taken their toll on the peloton reducing it to just 60 riders, Team Sunweb were still well represented in numbers on the approach to the finish and began to move up towards the front of the bunch positioning themselves for the fast dash to the line.
Having already managed to steer clear of any crashes in the wet conditions of the second half of the stage, an incident on the final corner before the run in to the finish held up the team which meant they were unable to contest the victory. Wilco Kelderman finishes the day having retained his 4th place in the general classification.
Team Sunweb coach Morten Bennekou said: “Our plan today was to secure Wilco’s general classification position before the final two stages which decide the standings. We expected a reduced bunch in the final and that’s exactly what we saw. In the group we had Sam, Lennard and Wilco which was an ideal situation. On the last corner there was a big crash and all three of our riders were caught up behind. In the end we took no result today but we are ready for the GC fight in the coming days.”
