Team Sunweb’s Max Walscheid takes 6th at Scheldeprijs after an action-filled day of racing.

Team Sunweb took to the start line of Scheldeprijs today, with a revised route for the 2018 edition of the race. An eight-rider breakaway jumped clear of the bunch inside the first 10 kilometres but were soon brought back to the bunch, and it wasn’t for another 35 kilometres that another five-rider group could break free. As the race reached it’s halfway point, crosswind action caused splits in the bunch and after crossing a railway crossing, the second peloton found themselves out of the race. Team Sunweb remained in the first peloton with Max Walscheid, Mike Teunissen and Søren Kragh Andersen.

The five-rider break was caught early and with plenty more still to play for, another two riders opened up a gap. They were ultimately brought back with 10 kilometres to go as Team Sunweb brought Max up to the front of the action on the approach to the finish. Despite various last-minute attacks, the race stayed together for a bunch kick to the line where Max finished the day in 6th place.

Reactions

“We made it with three guys into the first split,” explained Max after the finish. “Søren, Mike and me all had really good legs today and we had a clear goal. The guys supported me very well, but in the end we didn’t make enough out of our strength, being too much behind going into the last two kilometres. We moved up strong, but for the circumstances of the last 3 kilometres 6th was the best result possible. We were close, but not smart enough and will take some good learning points forward to the upcoming races.”

Team Sunweb coach Tom Veelers added: “It was a windy day today which was a big change compared to the previous years. It was a good race for us; we had three guys going into the final after the railway crossing and a crash just before. The day came down to a group of 30 riders sprinting. Søren and Mike tried to put Max in a good position, it didn’t work out perfectly and we had to invest a lot to bring Max up to the front. We came here for a top result and things didn’t work out, but we remain confident that the result will come in the upcoming races.”
