Team Sunweb’s Joris Nieuwenhuis lined up at the Superprestige series taking place in Zonhoven today. Famous for its sandy parcours, the race featured 10 laps of a technical circuit with numerous sand sections.
After a strong start Joris held a strong position inside the top 15 riders. As the race entered its third lap a group of four riders began to open up a 20 second gap, with three of these riders later going on to contest the podium places. Joris continued to chase but began to experience some back pain. This coupled with the hot weather forced Joris to end his race after five laps.
Joris said: “Today wasn’t a good day for me. I had troubles with the heat and some technical problems in the sand. When such things happen it’s hard to stay mentally focused. After a few laps my back began to hurt so much that it wasn’t a good idea to continue pushing for a result. Now I will continue to focus on the coming races and keep working to bring myself to a new level.”
Team Sunweb coach Herman Snoeijink said: “Today wasn’t Joris’ day. The high temperature really affected him and he was experiencing some problems with his back. After five laps he called it a day to ensure the problem didn’t worsen. We will now look ahead to the coming races and focus on continuing his development whilst racing in the elite category.”
