Team Sunweb’s cyclo-cross season opened today with the Superprestige Series’ first round at Gieten. Competing for the first time in the elite category, Joris Nieuwenhuis lined up for ten laps of a technical circuit looking to continue his development in the cyclo-cross discipline.
The tempo was high from the go and in the opening laps the bunch began to split. The fast pace saw things come back together with Joris hanging on to the leading group. As the laps ticked down the gaps between contenders increased and a select group was formed. With the leading group contesting the victory Joris finished the day in 14th place.
After the race Joris said: “I’m really excited to be back at cyclo-cross for the new season. Today was a really tough day. Racing with the pros for the first time was really cool and I already knew that I would lack a little bit of rhythm. Most of the guys racing have already done a few races so it was tough competition. I went pretty hard at the beginning and my legs felt empty, but as the race went on I found a good pace again and could finish 14th. I’m pretty satisfied with how the legs are and how my first race went, I’m looking forward to making the next steps towards taking a top 10 result.”
Team Sunweb coach Herman Snoejink added: “Joris had a really good start to his season today. The first three laps went really well and after starting in the second row he came up to seventh place. After that moment he lost some placings but this is completely within expectations for this early stage of the season. His performance today shows that his shape is coming and is a great indicator of the development riding in the elite category will bring.”
