It was a tough day out in the mud for Development Team Sunweb’s Joris Nieuwenhuis whilst racing at Superprestige Gavere today, as he finished the day in 17th place.
After a speedy first lap, one rider went clear whilst another two went on to chase. As the gaps formed Joris found himself positioned inside the first 20 riders in a chasing group that continued to push for the remainder of the race. A challenging course with treacherous conditions saw Joris battle it out for a place inside the top 20. He went on to finish the day in 17th place.
Joris said: “I was really suffering at the beginning of the race. After a few laps I began to feel better and I had a bit more power on the climb. The feeling on the bike wasn’t actually so bad but I am in a different place to where I was at this time last year. I still feel that race by race I am progressing and that the “cross feeling” is coming.”
Team Sunweb coach Herman Snoeijink said: “Today was certainly the most difficult race of the season so far. There was mud and only mud, and continuous uphill and downhill stretches that were really challenging. He had a good start but came into the field in around 16th position and fell a few places back. He managed to come back later on in the race and his technique really came as the race progressed.”
