After spending most of the day in the breakaway, Development Team Sunweb’s Max Kanter finished the day in 3rd place after two riders attacked from the break to take the win.
Multiple groups tried their luck on the attack in the early stages of Ronde van Overijssel but no move stuck until 109 kilometres had been raced. A 14 rider group managed to go clear with Max Kanter representing Development Team Sunweb in the leading group. As the gap opened out to just under five minutes, the chase in the peloton was ignited. Bringing the group back to 45 seconds, two chase groups set off in pursuit of the break, forming a 26 rider group at the front of the race. Two riders went on to jump clear from the break to take the first and second places on the podium, with Max winning the sprint from the chasing group behind to finish in 3rd place.
Team Sunweb coach Tom Veelers said: “Today was a nice day through my home town which meant that we had some good knowledge of the parcours which we spoke about upfront. We went all in for Max today for the sprint and he ended up staying away in a big group. We only had Max in the group and in the end there was a sprint between the break. Two guys opened up a 10 second gap and took the 1-2 and Max won the sprint from behind to take 3rd; a solid result from him.”
